Starting mid-October, you may notice a slight difference in your Course Navigation Menu. In an effort to improve clarity and meet accessibility standards, Canvas is changing how hidden menu items display for instructors. Additionally, Canvas is including a visual indicator for all users to help define the users active menu item.
Previously, the hidden menu items displayed for instructors in a light gray text with a light border, which did not fulfill appropriate accessibility contrast ratios. Also, active and inactive menu items only relied on color to convey information.
With the update, course navigation menu items that are inactive will display in the user account’s primary color. The active link – the location where the user currently is in the course – will display in black and includes a vertical line to the left of the item’s name. The hover state for a link will include an underline by default. When selected, the link will display with a border.
Menu items hidden from students will now display with an eye icon to the right of the item, so instructors will be able to determine at a glance which menu items are available to students.
