Creating and Managing Recordings
When you record a Zoom meeting, there are two options as to where to store the recording: on your computer’s hard drive, or in the cloud.

To start a recording, click the Record icon and choose the desired option. Canvas instructors are suggested to choose Cloud, as the recordings could be easily shared with students.

Record to the Cloud

This option is only available to Pro account users. Request one here if you are a teaching faculty.

Record to the cloud will store the recordings on the web under your Zoom account. There are several paths to access the cloud recordings:

  • In a Canvas course, go to the Zoom link and open the Cloud Recordings tab.
  • From the Zoom web site (http://umkc.zoom.us), go to the My Recordings link in the left-hand navigation and choose the Cloud Recordings tab.
  • From the Zoom desktop app, click Meetings > Recorded.

NOTE: Cloud recordings will be auto-deleted after 30 days. Archive your recordings in time by downloading them to your computer hard drive, or link them to Kaltura (See Sharing Zoom recordings in a Canvas Course for instructions).

Access, Download, and Edit Cloud Recordings

To view or edit your cloud recordings, click on the recording name. You will be able to edit the title, view, download, share or delete the files.

Commonly there will be 4 files for each recording: video, audio, transcript and chat log. The transcript is automatically generated and can contain errors. You can edit the texts when you open the MP4 video.

Share a Cloud Recording

Students in your Canvas course will be able to access recordings via the Zoom link in the course (while the recordings are still available).

You may share a cloud recording with people outside of the course by clicking on the Share button. Choose desired options, and copy the information into emails, web pages, etc.

Record on Computer

This option is available for both basic and pro users. Record on Computer stores the recording files on your local computer hard drive.

Unless you select a specific location, the recording will be stored in a default folder.

  • PC: This PC > Documents > Zoom
  • Mac: Documents > Zoom

Once the conversion process is complete, the folder containing the recording files will automatically open. By default, the audio/video file (MP4) will be named “Zoom_0.mp4.” The audio only file (M4A) is named “audio_only.m4a.”

Local recording info including the path on your computer is also available in your Zoom account, under My Recordings. This could be particularly helpful in case you do not remember where the recordings were saved.
