Create an assignment using Panopto’s Quizzing feature
One way to enhance student engagement and ensure students are viewing instructor-created videos is to create an assignment in Canvas that uses Panopto’s Quizzing feature. If you are unfamiliar with Panopto’s quizzing feature, please read the step-by-step guide for creating quizzes in Panopto before completing the steps outlined below.

  1. Log in to Canvas and navigate to the course where you want to create an assignment based on a Panopto quiz.
  2. Select Assignments in the left-hand course navigation menu. Then select the +Assignments button in the top right-hand corner.
A red arrow points to the Assignments link in the left-hand course navigation menu; a red circle with a the number 1 indicates this is the first step. A second red arrow points to the +Assignment button located at the top, right-hand corner of the page; a red circle with number 2 indicates this is the second step.
  3. Provide a title for the assignment and indicate the point value.
A red arrow points to the text field for the assignment title/name. A second red arrow points to the point value for the assignment.
  4. Select the External Tool options for Submission type, check Load Tool in a New Tab, and then select the Panopto Quiz Tool from the Find button menu.
The first red arrow points to the selection External Tool from the Submission Type drop-down menu. The second red arrow indicates that you should select the box next to Load This Tool in a New Tab. The final red arrow points to the Find button where you can locate the option for Panopto Quiz Tool.
  5. This will pop up the embedded upload control and you can select the Panopto video you want to set as the assignment. Once selected, choose Insert and proceed to the next step.
The embeded pop-up displays a Panopto video to select as the assignment.
  6. Set the Due date (if necessary) along with any Available from or Available until dates (if necessary) and select either Save for later editing or Save & Publish so students may view the assignment and complete it.
The first red arrow points to the Due date field. The second red arrow points to the Available from and Available until date fields. The third red arrow points to the Save or Save & Publish buttons.

Once the assignment is saved, it will be listed on the Assignments page and be edited by the instructor. Once published, the Panopto quiz may be completed by students. If you have multiple Panopto quizzes created in a single Panopto video, the scores will be combined into one score and tracked as one assignment in Canvas as opposed to a separate score and assignment for each quiz within the video.
