Proctoring at UMKC: New Options for Test Integrity

Finding the right solution for proctoring your exam can be a challenge. So UMKC Online and Instructional Technology Services (ITS) have teamed up to summarize all of the available options for live and remote proctoring at UMKC. The list, as well as information about how to get started, can be found at http://www.umkc.edu/ia/it/proctoring/.

Face-To-Face Test Proctoring

If you are teaching a face-to-face course, here are some on-campus solutions for proctoring exams:

Optical Scanning Services. These bubble-type scan sheets are purchased through the UMKC IS Call Center. Once the test is completed, the sheets are delivered to Optical Scanning Services for processing. See specific information about using scan sheets for testing.

Assessment and Training Center. UMKC has a 36-seat computer lab for proctored online exam taking. Test dates are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. The instructor must provide a proctor for the test instance. See more information about the lab.

ExamSoft. This software is not a proctoring tool but one that restricts a student’s computer while an exam is being taken. It is used in large lecture classes when students take exams on their personal computers in a proctored setting. We recommend using ExamSoft in conjunction with a live proctor in an on-campus setting. ExamSoft is currently only licensed by a few schools on the UMKC campus. Remote Proctoring

Remote proctoring means that the instructor or a designated proctor watches your online students take a test (via a live audio/video feed) or that a test instance is recorded while the student takes the exam. The purpose of a recorded exam is that it can be viewed later should questions be raised. Live, online proctoring means that a person from a proctoring company is watching and listening via audio/video feed while a student takes an exam. All remote proctoring options require that students have a good internet connection and a functional webcam and microphone.

Respondus Lockdown Browser. This custom browser locks down the testing environment within Blackboard. Students are unable to copy, print, access other applications, or visit other websites during an online exam. If you have questions about Respondus Monitor, please contact ITS at its@umkc.edu.

Respondus Monitor. This companion product to Respondus LockDown Browser allows students to take an online exam in any remote location with the audio/video session recorded for later review by the instructor. The cost of this tool to students is $10 per semester, per course.

NOTE: Instructors have access to a third Respondus software called Respondus 4.0, which is a tool for creating and managing exams that can be printed to paper or published directly to Blackboard. Respondus 4.0 is not a proctoring tool and should not be confused with Lockdown or Monitor.

Live Online Proctoring with Examity. UMKC has contracted for this service to be available at a cost to students. Exams proctored with Examity cost the student $15 per hour for the first hour and $7 for each additional hour. Instructors using this proctoring method will need to add instructions and projected student costs to the syllabus and Blackboard course site before the start of the term.
